How can I be an effective leader?

One model of good leadership is "Action Centred Leadership" from John Adair [and later The Industrial Society] who points out  the achievement of the task, development of the individual and the building of the team play an equal part.

The leader of a team aims to spend equal amounts of time and effort in each of the areas, however it is so easy to get bogged down in one area, especially the "Task". It is important to regularly "step back" and consider if you should be adjusting the focus of your efforts.

When considering the checklist below, do not forget that the circles overlap, and therefore there is impact of each action on others. Also note that the checklist should be a cylinder, ie when you reach the bottom you should go back to the top, and start over again. This is also part of the "standing back" process. The leader keeps their eye on the ball and helps keep the team focussed.

Below is a checklist of things for the leader to remember when working with their team. It focuses on the "WHAT" of leadership.
